WHAT ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS?

The Most Comprehensive Smile Change Available

A veneer is a thin layer of dental porcelain, typically 0.5mm to 1mm thick, bonded to the front and biting edge of a tooth. Because porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel, the result is virtually indistinguishable from your own teeth, even to someone sitting directly across from you.

Veneers are not a single-issue treatment. They address a range of smile concerns in one procedure, which is why patients who want a meaningful change often choose them over whitening, bonding or any other single treatment.

Permanent staining

Stains that whitening cannot remove

Chipped or broken teeth

Short or worn teeth

Restore length and proportion

Shape inconsistencies

Implants cost more upfront. Over a lifetime, they are typically the most cost-effective option because they rarely need replacing.

HOW VENEERS ARE PLACED

From Consultation to Final Result

The veneer process takes place across two to three appointments over two to four weeks. Here is exactly what happens at each stage.

First visit, free

Consultation and planning

We examine your teeth and gums to confirm they are healthy enough for veneers, then discuss your goals in detail. We take photographs and impressions, show you shade options on a real shade guide, and give you a clear picture of what the result will look like. A full itemised cost plan is provided before you agree to anything. There is no obligation to proceed at this stage.

Second visit

Tooth preparation

A thin layer of enamel, typically 0.5mm, is removed from the front surface of each tooth being treated. This creates space for the veneer to sit flush with your neighbouring teeth rather than adding bulk to your smile. Temporary veneers are fitted at this appointment so you leave looking presentable while your permanent veneers are fabricated in the laboratory.

This step is permanent. Enamel does not grow back. We discuss cosmetic bonding as a reversible alternative at consultation if this concerns you.

2 to 3 weeks later

Veneer fitting

Your custom porcelain veneers arrive from the laboratory. We remove the temporary veneers, try in the permanent ones dry first to confirm the shape and shade, then bond them to your teeth using dental adhesive. We check your bite across every tooth, make any fine adjustments and confirm you are happy before you leave. The result is permanent from this point.

1 to 2 weeks after

Follow-up check

A brief follow-up appointment to confirm the bite has settled comfortably, the gum tissue around the veneers is healthy and you are happy with the outcome. We provide written aftercare guidance and discuss nightguard options for patients who grind their teeth during sleep, since grinding is the most common cause of premature veneer damage.

Nightguards are a small investment that can double the life of your veneers.

SUSTAINIBILITY

Are You a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to improve their smile are suitable for veneers. Here is a clear and honest guide.

You are likely a good candidate if you...

We confirm suitability with a thorough examination at your free consultation. The vast majority of adults who enquire about veneers at Novadent are suitable candidates.

You are likely a good candidate if you...

Many of these situations are manageable. Grinding is controlled with a nightguard. Decay is resolved before treatment begins. We discuss every option honestly at your consultation.

AFTERCARE AND LONGEVITY

10 to 15 Years Is the Average. Many Last Longer.

Well-maintained porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years. The porcelain itself does not stain or deteriorate, but the bond between the veneer and the tooth can weaken over time, and the gum line recedes slightly with age which can expose the veneer margin. The four habits below are the most effective ways to extend the life of your veneers significantly.

Wear a nightguard if you grind

Grinding during sleep is the single biggest risk to veneers. The sustained pressure cracks porcelain over time in a way that normal biting forces do not. If you grind, a custom nightguard is not optional, it is essential. We include a nightguard discussion in your follow-up appointment.

Brush and floss daily without abrasives

Clean your veneers the same way you clean natural teeth. Use a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Avoid whitening toothpastes with harsh abrasives as these can micro-scratch the porcelain surface over years of use.

Attend six-monthly check-ups

Your dentist checks the veneer margins, the bonding, the gum line position and the underlying tooth at each visit. Early detection of any loosening or marginal gap means a straightforward repair rather than full replacement.

Avoid biting hard objects with veneers

Do not bite nails, open packaging with your teeth or chew ice with veneered teeth. Porcelain is hard but brittle. These habits create point-pressure that can chip the veneer edge. Use scissors for packaging and think of your veneers the same way you think of natural teeth.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything You Want to Know About Veneers

Honest answers to the questions we hear most from Lagos patients considering porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

A thin layer of enamel, typically 0.5mm, is removed from the front surface of each tooth to allow the veneer to sit flush. This is minimal and precisely controlled. The honest answer, however, is that it is permanent. Enamel does not grow back, which means veneers are a commitment. We discuss this clearly at consultation and present cosmetic bonding as a fully reversible alternative for patients who prefer not to have any enamel removed.

Well-maintained porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years. The porcelain itself does not stain or deteriorate over time. What ages is the bond between the veneer and the tooth, and the gum line position as it naturally recedes over the years. The main causes of early replacement are grinding without a nightguard, trauma, and poor oral hygiene leading to decay at the veneer margin. Many of our patients keep their veneers well beyond 15 years.

Yes. Porcelain is chosen precisely because it mimics the way natural enamel reflects and transmits light. No other material comes as close. Your veneers are custom shade-matched to your surrounding teeth and shaped to complement your face, skin tone and lip line. Most people cannot tell veneers from natural teeth unless you point them out. This is not an exaggeration. It is why patients tell us they smile more freely after the procedure.

No. Porcelain does not respond to whitening agents. The shade of a porcelain veneer is permanently set at the point of fabrication. If you want to whiten your natural teeth alongside having veneers, the correct sequence is to whiten first to establish the shade you want, then have your veneers made to match that shade. We will advise on this at consultation if it is relevant to your case.

Gum contouring is a minor cosmetic procedure that reshapes the gum line using a soft-tissue laser or scalpel. It is used when an uneven or excessively high gum line is affecting the overall symmetry of the smile. Not everyone needs it. For patients who do, it is usually carried out at the tooth preparation appointment and heals quickly. We will tell you honestly at consultation whether your gum line would benefit from reshaping as part of your veneer plan.

We provide a full itemised cost breakdown at your free consultation before anything is agreed. The cost depends on the number of veneers, the complexity of the case and whether any additional treatments such as whitening or gum contouring are included. There are no hidden charges and no obligation to proceed after the consultation. We want you to make your decision with complete information.
